The Argument
The best case that can honestly be made
The proponent case rests on real forest, real late discoveries, and real anatomy. Every one of those late discoveries ended with physical material on a museum shelf. That is the difference.
Everything below is an argument a serious person has made in print. Each is stated at its strongest, then followed by what it does not establish. If you are a proponent and you finish this page feeling caricatured, that is a defect in the page, not a feature of it.
The forest is genuinely enormous, and genuinely under-watched
The United States held 3,097,950 square kilometers of forest in 2022, and Canada held 3,468,541. DOCUMENTED That is roughly 6.6 million square kilometers of temperate and boreal woodland on one continent. The number is not rhetorical. It is the World Bank series AG.LND.FRST.K2, built from national forest inventories.
Systematic wildlife survey across that area is thin. SNAPSHOT USA 2019, described by its own authors as "a coordinated national camera trap survey of the United States," ran from August 17 to November 24, 2019 and deployed 1,509 camera sites across 110 arrays in twelve ecoregions in all fifty states. It logged 166,036 detections of 83 mammal species and 17 bird species. Set against the American forest figure, that is one camera for roughly every 2,000 square kilometers, and not every camera was in forest. It is the best continental-scale effort anyone has organized, and it is still a scattering of pinholes.
What it does not establish. Unwatched area is not evidence of an occupant. The same arithmetic covers pterosaurs, mammoths, and anything else you would like to place in it. Empty space is a precondition for a hidden species, not a reason to think one is there. The thinness also cuts both ways. Bears, cougars, and other large mammals occupy the same gaps, and they turn up in the detection tallies.
Large mammals really are described late
This is the proponent's strongest analogy, and it is a fair one. The pace of mammal description did not stop in the nineteenth century.

Gerardo Ceballos and Paul Ehrlich counted 408 new mammal species described since 1993, about ten percent of the previously known fauna, and reported that roughly 40 percent of them were large and distinctive rather than cryptic. DOCUMENTED Anyone who says the mammal list was closed by 1900 is simply wrong.
What it does not establish. Read the right-hand column again. The saola arrived as a skull and a pair of horns off a hunter's wall. The rabbit arrived off a market stall, ten specimens of it. Each of these descriptions ended with material a museum could accession and a later worker could re-examine. Bigfoot has never reached that stage. The analogy holds up to the exact point where it would start to matter, and then it stops.
One honest caveat about the middle row. The sources I could open confirm the 2005 Science description and the 2006 move to Rungwecebus on genetic and morphological grounds, but they do not describe how the type specimen was obtained. The widely repeated story that it was a juvenile killed in a farmer's trap is left out here because I could not verify it.
Apes can and do avoid people
The Cross River gorilla is the case to cite. Fewer than 250 mature individuals were thought to survive as of the 2014 assessment, spread across about 12,000 square kilometers of the Nigeria and Cameroon border in eleven known localities. DOCUMENTED Hunting pressure has made them intensely wary. Direct sightings are rare, and the subspecies was not captured on professional video until 2009. A large, intelligent, hunted ape can make itself very hard to see. That is not speculation.
What it does not establish. The Cross River gorilla is documented in the ordinary currency of zoology. Paul Matschie described it in 1904. Field data on it come from nests, feeding trails, and feces; its distribution is supported by genetic research; its distinctiveness was established by analyses of cranial and tooth morphology and long bone proportions. Its range is less than a fifth of one percent the size of North America's forest, and it is still documented at every one of those levels. The lesson runs the wrong way for the proponent. Elusiveness explains why you rarely see an ape. It does not explain why you never once recover one.
The record is old, and it is not a modern fad
Rock art at Painted Rock on the Tule River Indian Reservation, attributed to the Yokuts, includes a group of figures whose largest member is called Hairy Man, or Mayak Datat. The panel is estimated at about 1,000 years old. That the rock art exists, and that it is old, is not in question. What it depicts, and whether "Hairy Man" maps onto anything a modern sighting report describes, is interpretation and not established fact. ALLEGED
Hair-covered beings appear in the traditions of many separate nations. The Lummi tell of Ts'emekwes, and the accounts differ between families on the creature's diet and activities. Haudenosaunee tradition includes the Genoskwa, or Stone Giant, an aggressive hair-covered giant with rock-hard skin. In 1847 the painter Paul Kane recorded stories from Native people of skoocooms, described as a race of cannibalistic wild men living on the peak of Mount St. Helens. The Alutiiq of the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska tell of the Nantinaq.
Those are four distinct nations, four languages from unrelated families, and four bodies of tradition with their own internal meanings. Collecting them under one heading is something outsiders did, starting in the twentieth century, and it is worth saying plainly that a Stone Giant with rock-hard skin and a Lummi story that varies by family are not obviously the same subject. This site does not speak for any of these nations, and the fact that a tradition mentions a large hairy being is not that nation's endorsement of a North American ape. The safe statement is narrower and still interesting: stories of large hair-covered beings are old and geographically widespread on this continent, and they predate the 1958 press coverage by centuries.
The Euro-American record is old too. Theodore Roosevelt printed the Bauman story in The Wilderness Hunter in 1893, secondhand, as a trapper's tale. ALLEGED In 1958 a bulldozer operator named Jerry Crew found sixteen-inch human-like prints at a logging site in Humboldt County, California. Andrew Genzoli of the Humboldt Times ran the plaster cast on the front page on October 6, 1958, and put the word "Bigfoot" into wide circulation. DOCUMENTED The Canadian journalist John Green began investigating in 1957, after meeting René Dahinden, and compiled a database of more than 3,000 sighting and track reports before his death on May 28, 2016. On April 1, 1969, Skamania County, Washington adopted Ordinance 69-01, which made killing the animal punishable by a $10,000 fine and five years in prison. DOCUMENTED The ordinance was amended in 1984 and has not been repealed, so the 1969 penalty should not be quoted as the current one. What the 1984 amendment changed is not stated in the source used here.
Proponents add that the reports include trained outdoor observers: game wardens, foresters, and police officers. That is very likely true in the plain sense that such people are in the woods and do file reports.
What it does not establish. A large report count is a fact about reporting. Two published papers point the same direction. Jeffrey Lozier, P. Aniello and Michael Hickerson published "Predicting the distribution of Sasquatch in western North America: anything goes with ecological niche modelling" in the Journal of Biogeography in 2009. Their point was primarily methodological, that convincing-looking niche models can be built from unreliable occurrence records, and they compared their Sasquatch model against black bear (Ursus americanus) distribution to argue that many reports reflect mistaken identity. CONTESTED
Floe Foxon regressed sasquatch sighting counts on black bear populations by state and province, adjusting for human population and forest area in a generalized linear model, in the Journal of Zoology in 2024. The reported association was that "every 1,000 bear increase in the bear population is associated with a 4% (95% CI: 1%–7%) increase in sasquatch sightings," and that across all states and provinces in 2006 there were "approximately 5,000 bears per sasquatch sighting." Foxon concluded that "many supposed sasquatch are really misidentified known forms." CONTESTED
Note what that figure is and is not. Five thousand bears per sighting is a ratio, not a per-bear misidentification rate, and it does not by itself say that any particular report was a bear. The continental bear population is also not a clean number. The estimates commonly cited are 339,000 to 465,000 in the United States as of 2011, a figure that excludes Alaska, Idaho, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming, and 396,000 to 476,000 in seven Canadian provinces from surveys taken in the mid-1990s. Those are partial counts fifteen years apart. Adding them into a single continental total, as is often done, produces a number more precise than the underlying data.
And no one has ever audited witness occupation. The "game wardens and police officers" claim is repeated constantly and has never, as far as I can find, been tabulated in a published study. Treat it as unmeasured rather than as established.
The best track case is better than its reputation
In December 1969 near Bossburg, Washington, a trackway was found in which the right foot appeared deformed. CONTESTED Grover Krantz, a physical anthropologist at Washington State University, was convinced by the morphological detail in the casts, particularly impressions he read as the thenar eminence muscle. His argument was that a hoax "would require someone quite familiar with the anatomy of the human hand to make the connection between a non-opposable thumb and an absence of the thenar eminence." He reconstructed an animal about 2.44 meters tall and roughly 363 kilograms from biomechanical modeling of the casts. John Napier, who had been Conservator of the Division of Mammals and Director of the Unit of Primatology and Human Evolution at the Smithsonian from 1967 to 1969, tentatively read the deformity as clubfoot.
Napier's overall position is the part worth getting right, because both camps quote half of it. In his 1973 book Bigfoot: The Yeti and Sasquatch in Myth and Reality, he wrote of the Patterson-Gimlin film that "the scientific evidence taken collectively points to a hoax of some kind," while also noting that "there was nothing in this film which would prove conclusively that this was a hoax," and elsewhere that "I could not see the zipper; and I still can't." He judged the evidence inconclusive overall, and wrote that if a conclusion had to be reached on the scant hard evidence, science must declare "Bigfoot does not exist." He nonetheless found the indirect evidence, especially the footprints, interesting enough that he declined to dismiss the subject as unworthy of study. That is the honest shape of the strongest evidence. A qualified specialist looked at the tracks and would not close the file, while telling his readers that the hard evidence pointed the other way.
What it does not establish. A pathology argument is an argument about how hard a hoax would have been, not about who made the impression. Difficulty is not provenance.
The Ray Wallace question is routinely overstated in both directions and is worth stating precisely. In 2002, the family of Ray Wallace, a coworker of Jerry Crew who had died that year, produced a collection of large carved wooden feet from his basement and stated that Wallace had been making the footprints and was responsible for the tracks Crew found. DOCUMENTED The wooden feet exist and the family made that statement. Wallace himself had said he obtained a pair of the large wooden feet in collaboration with the hoaxer Rant Mullens, and used them to make footprints at the 1958 construction site to scare off thieves. ALLEGED Against that, Ed Schillinger, who was present at the original Bluff Creek discovery, disputes the family's account, and the cryptozoologists Mark A. Hall and Loren Coleman have expressed doubt about the authenticity of some of the Bluff Creek tracks. CONTESTED
What is often asserted next, in both directions, is not supported by anything I could open. I found no published comparison of Wallace's carved feet against the 1958 casts, in either direction. So the skeptic's "Bigfoot was invented by Ray Wallace in 1958 and that settles it" overreaches, and so does the proponent's "the feet do not match, therefore the claim is dead." The accurate statement is that the field's foundational track case has a serious, partly self-admitted hoax claim attached to it that has never been resolved by published analysis.
The midtarsal break is a real anatomical argument
Human feet are stiff. The longitudinal arch turns the foot into a lever at push-off. Ape feet flex through the midfoot at the transverse tarsal joint, producing a break in the sole and a distinctive pressure pattern. Jeffrey Meldrum, a full professor of anatomy and anthropology in the Department of Biological Sciences at Idaho State University with a 1989 doctorate in anatomical sciences from Stony Brook, holds over 300 footprint casts and has argued that some of them show exactly this midfoot flexion, which a person in prosthetic feet would not produce. CONTESTED This is a testable morphological claim about a real joint. It is not hand-waving, and it deserves better than the reflexive eye-roll it usually gets.
What it does not establish. The inference rests on the premise that the midtarsal break is absent in humans. That premise is false. Jeremy DeSilva and Simone Gill put 398 people on plantar pressure plates and filmed them walking, and reported that 32 of the 398 showed both elevated lateral midfoot pressures and midfoot dorsiflexion characteristic of a midtarsal break. Those people had significantly flatter feet on average and more medial weight transfer through stance. DEBUNKED The paper is American Journal of Physical Anthropology 151 (2013), pages 495 to 499, with a larger follow-up in the same journal in 2015.
So the feature is present in the casts, and it is also present in about eight people in a hundred walking down the street. It is not diagnostic of a non-human foot. That does not make Meldrum's observation of the casts false. It removes the inference he wants to draw from it. Critics have been blunter. David Daegling wrote of Meldrum's book Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science that he was "unable or unwilling to distinguish good research from bad, science from pseudoscience," and Benjamin Radford, Michael Dennett, Matt Crowley and Daegling published "The Nonsense and Non-science of Sasquatch" in Skeptical Inquirer 31(3), 2007, pages 58 to 61.

What would settle it
One specimen. Type material a museum can accession, or a carcass, or bones with intact collagen. That is the complete list, and no proponent seriously disputes it. Everything on this page is an argument that a specimen is possible. None of it is a substitute for one.
The fair version of the proponent position is narrower than "Bigfoot is real," and it is harder to dismiss. The continent is big enough, the discovery record is recent enough, and apes are cryptic enough that the hypothesis is not absurd on its face, and the footprint corpus contains a few items nobody has explained to everyone's satisfaction. That is a real position. A Smithsonian primatologist declined to close the file on the footprints, and a tenured anatomist has argued the casts in print for decades.
It is also, nearly seven decades after the 1958 casts, a position with a body count of zero.
