The Argument
The specimen problem
After a century of reports there is no bone, tooth, hide or fossil of Bigfoot anywhere, and each standard explanation for that absence fails on its own numbers.
No one has produced a Bigfoot. Not a body, not a skull, not a mandible, not a femur, not a tooth, not a strip of hide with tissue attached. Nor is there a fossil: no ape other than humans is known from the fossil record of the Americas at all. DOCUMENTED
The nearest candidate anyone proposes is Gigantopithecus blacki, and it is worth being precise about what that animal is known from. Teeth, in quantity, and four mandibles. Everything is Asian, from at least sixteen sites in southern China plus disputed material further south, the oldest about 2.2 million years old and the youngest dated to between 295,000 and 215,000 years ago. No postcranial bone of it has ever been recovered anywhere. The usual explanation for that gap is porcupines, which haul bones into dens and consume everything but the enamel-capped tooth crowns, and it is a fair warning against assuming bone always survives. It is also an explanation for missing limb bones in Chinese cave deposits, not for a missing animal across a continent. See Gigantopithecus for the full case.
Jane Goodall said publicly that she wanted the animal to exist. On NPR in 2002: "Well, I'm a romantic, so I always wanted them to exist." Ten years later, to HuffPost, she stated the difficulty in one sentence. "Of course, it's strange that there has never been a single authentic hide or hair of the Bigfoot, but I've read all the accounts."
Everything else on this site is a question about evidence. This is a question about an object.
What has actually been put in front of the public
Purported bodies have been exhibited three times, and all three exhibitions ended the same way.
The Minnesota Iceman was shown in a refrigerated coffin at state fairs and shopping malls from 1967 onward. George Berklacy of the Smithsonian's public relations office reached a West Coast firm by telephone that said it had built the figure for Frank Hansen out of latex rubber and hair in April 1967, and the Smithsonian Torch of June 1969 put the price at $3,500. John Napier, then curator of primate collections at the Smithsonian, wrote that "the 'original' model and the present so-called 'substitute' are one and the same." He also never examined the object, and he was explicit that his reconstruction was a guess: "I can offer no kind of proof for my suggestions." Ivan Sanderson, who did see it, insisted to the end that the later exhibit was not the thing he had examined. Whether an earlier and different object ever existed is unsettled. CONTESTED What is settled is the figure that survives. It sold on eBay in February 2013, in a listing that called it "the actual sideshow gaff" and "a one of a kind hoax," and it has been on display at the Museum of the Weird in Austin, Texas since that July. The other two are shorter stories. In August 2008 Matthew Whitton and Rick Dyer exhibited a body in a freezer at a Palo Alto press conference; thawed over the following two days it produced a rubber foot and a hollow head, and both men admitted to a costume on August 17. Dyer returned in 2014 with a touring figure called Hank, which the Spokane prop shop that built it identified as its own work in latex, foam and camel hair. HOAX Both are cataloged with dates and outcomes in the hoax file.
Melba Ketchum's DNA claim was announced by press release on November 24, 2012. On February 13, 2013 she announced that the work had appeared in the DeNovo Journal of Science, a website registered anonymously nine days earlier whose first and only issue contained nothing but that paper. Leonid Kruglyak of Princeton told the Houston Chronicle: "To state the obvious, no data or analyses are presented that in any way support the claim that their samples come from a new primate or human-primate hybrid." DEBUNKED The full audit, including a proponent's own reanalysis showing the flagship sample is an American black bear, is at the DNA record.
The one peer-reviewed test
Bryan Sykes, Rhettman Mullis, Christophe Hagenmuller, Terry Melton and Michel Sartori published a systematic genetic survey of anomalous-primate hair in Proceedings of the Royal Society B in 2014, volume 281, issue 1789, article 20140161. Thirty samples yielded a usable 12S rRNA sequence. Every one of them matched a known mammal. DOCUMENTED The tally: American black bear (6), horse (4), cow (4), wolf, coyote or dog (4), brown bear (2), raccoon (2), two Himalayan samples matching polar bear, and one each of sheep, serow, deer, North American porcupine, Malayan tapir, and human.
Note that the animal in that list often reported as a goat is a serow, Capricornis sumatraensis, a Southeast Asian goat-antelope. The two polar bear matches did not survive. Ceiridwen Edwards and Ross Barnett showed in the same journal in 2015 that the sequence matched a modern polar bear accession rather than the Pleistocene jawbone it was attributed to; Eliécer Gutiérrez and Ronald Pine reached the same conclusion in ZooKeys that June, noting that only four positions in the 104-base-pair fragment separate brown from polar bear and both species vary at them. In 2017 Tianying Lan, Charlotte Lindqvist and colleagues sequenced complete mitogenomes from the region and placed the yeti samples with Himalayan brown bear, Ursus arctos isabellinus. DEBUNKED
Answer one, the forest eats everything
The most common proponent reply is that forests dispose of carcasses fast. That part is true and it is measured. Akino Inagaki and colleagues, camera-trapping ungulate carcasses in Japanese forests, found them completely consumed in an average of 7.0 days, faster in warm weather and slower for larger animals (Scientific Reports 12:16451, 2022). A fresh carcass in the woods is not a durable object.
The reply fails on the next step. Soft tissue disappears. Skulls, mandibles, teeth and long bones do not, and those are the parts that end up in collections. The claim also proves too much, since it applies with equal force to every other large mammal in North America, and those animals sit in museum drawers by the thousand.

Those are GBIF occurrence counts filtered to preserved specimens, queried September 3, 2026. The wolverine line is the one that matters. A low-density animal that almost nobody ever sees has left more than four thousand physical specimens in North American collections alone. Decomposition did not prevent that.
The sasquatch row deserves an honest footnote, because it is not quite a null query result. GBIF's backbone taxonomy does carry one sasquatch name, Homo sapiens cognatus Ketchum, 2013, listed as an accepted subspecies and credited to the DeNovo paper. It has zero occurrence records of any kind, specimen or observation. DOCUMENTED A name can propagate into a database without an animal behind it. That is the whole problem in miniature.
Answer two, nobody finds dead bears either
This is the version you hear most often, and as stated it is false. DEBUNKED Bear remains are recovered constantly, counted, and entered in state ledgers.
Florida keeps the tidiest example. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission records 376 bear deaths in 2023 (318 of them road collisions), 348 in 2024 (296 on roads), and 371 in 2025 (289 on roads). From 2006 through 2025 the state logged 5,877 dead bears, every one recorded by county and cause. DOCUMENTED
Setting that against a population figure requires care, and the comparison is looser than it looks. The most recent statewide estimate is 4,050 bears, and it is from 2014 and 2015. The twenty-year average of 294 recovered carcasses a year is about 7 percent of that figure; the last three years average 365, or about 9 percent. Both percentages use a decade-old denominator for a population FWC describes as having grown, so treat them as an upper bound on the rate rather than a measurement of it. What is not loose is the raw count. Florida alone has picked up nearly six thousand bear carcasses in twenty years.
Pennsylvania estimates about 19,000 black bears and states that population trend and harvest levels are monitored annually. Agencies do not lose track of dead bears. They budget around them.
Answer three, they bury their dead
The burial claim circulates widely in the field. I could find no published observation behind it: no named account of a sasquatch burial, no excavated site, no described grave, nothing to examine. ALLEGED It is also self-defeating in two directions. Burial does not destroy bone, so a species that buried its dead for a thousand years would have left a thousand years of buried bone, and mammal bone in temperate soil is what archaeologists and excavator operators turn up routinely. And burial does an animal no good whatever when the thing that killed it was a truck doing sixty on a state highway.
Answer four, there are too few of them
This one has real content, and it cuts the wrong way. Lochran Traill, Corey Bradshaw and Barry Brook's meta-analysis of thirty years of published minimum viable population estimates, covering 141 sources and 212 species, derived a median MVP of 4,169 individuals with a 95 percent confidence interval of 3,577 to 5,129, and concluded that for most species the figure will exceed a few thousand individuals. Their own caveat belongs here too: they found little support for any ecological or life-history predictor of MVP and concluded that the value is context-specific with no short-cuts. The median is a reference point, not a species-specific requirement.
Phillips Stevens, a cultural anthropologist at the University at Buffalo, made the same point in plainer language. A long-lived species needs a breeding population, and "that requires a substantial number, spread out over a fairly wide area where they can find sufficient food and shelter to keep hidden from all the investigators."
So the small-population defense sets a floor. On the published numbers, a viable North American sasquatch population would be roughly the size of Florida's bear population, which yields something like 300 documented carcasses a year. The calorie and habitat arithmetic is worked through separately at what a breeding population would require.
There is also a direct statistical result about the sightings themselves. Floe Foxon, in the Journal of Zoology 323(1), online January 13, 2024, regressed reported sasquatch sightings on black bear populations by state and province while controlling for human population and forest area. Every increase of 1,000 bears was associated with a 4 percent increase in sightings (95 percent confidence interval 1 to 7 percent), working out to approximately 5,000 bears per sasquatch sighting. DOCUMENTED Foxon wrote plainly that "the present study does not prove that all sasquatch sightings are bear sightings (nor was this study designed for that purpose)." The most-quoted figure also moved by roughly an order of magnitude between preprint versions when one covariate changed, which is set out in full at the bear correlation.
Answer five, they avoid people
Avoidance is a real behavior in real animals, and it does not defeat instrumentation. SNAPSHOT USA, a coordinated national camera-trap survey, sampled 1,509 camera sites across 110 arrays in all fifty states over a fourteen-week period from August 17 to November 24, 2019, and logged 166,036 unique detections of 83 mammal species and 17 bird species, every image reviewed at least twice. Nothing unaccounted for appeared in it.
Deliberate baiting has been tried too. In 1974 the North American Wildlife Research Team built a ten-by-ten-foot box of two-by-twelve planks, bound with metal bands and anchored to telephone poles, in what is now the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest in Jackson County, Oregon. They kept it baited with carcasses for six years and caught only bears. The door has been bolted open since 1980, the Forest Service repaired the structure in 2006 under its Passport in Time program, and it is now a stop on the Collings Mountain hiking trail.
The vehicle argument
This is the hardest single number in the field, because a road does not care how shy an animal is.

The FHWA figure is worth quoting exactly, because it is often loosely paraphrased. Drawing on carcass counts, insurance data, police-reported crashes and public interviews, the 2008 report "estimates that there are between one and two million collisions between vehicles and large animals in the United States every year."
The instructive case is a cougar. On June 11, 2011, a young male was killed by a car on the Wilbur Cross Parkway in Milford, Connecticut. Genetic work by Jason Hawley and colleagues in the Journal of Mammalogy traced him to the Black Hills of South Dakota, more than 2,450 kilometers away in a straight line, and confirmed him at five locations along the route in Minnesota, Wisconsin, New York and Michigan from DNA and photographs. That is the longest dispersal ever documented for the species, by an animal whose entire life strategy is not being seen. The authors' conclusion is the part worth keeping: evidence from that one animal, set against the complete absence of verifiable data behind most anecdotal eastern cougar reports, further confirmed the lack of a breeding population in the region.
A car found a cougar that had crossed most of a continent. In more than a century, no car has found a sasquatch.
Why hunters have not produced one
State agencies count what hunters kill. Florida logs every recovered bear by cause and Pennsylvania monitors harvest annually. Hunters and roadkill are how novel records enter the literature, as the Milford cougar shows.
The proponent answer here is social rather than biological. Mike Mays of the North American Wood Ape Conservancy is quoted in Texas Monthly in November 2023 saying that "if just anyone hauled in a Bigfoot carcass the blowback from animal rights groups and beyond would be ruinous." ALLEGED That is a prediction about how people would react to an event that has never occurred, so there is no evidence against which to test it.
The Skamania ordinance does not carry the weight put on it
Skamania County, Washington adopted Ordinance 69-01 on April 1, 1969. It is real. It ran in the Skamania County Pioneer on April 4 and April 11, 1969, and the publisher had it notarized on April 12 because readers assumed it was an April Fool's joke. DOCUMENTED Its operative sentence: "any premeditated, wilful and wanton slaying of such creature shall be deemed a felony punishable by a fine not to exceed Ten Thousand Dollars ($10,000) and/or imprisonment in the county jail for a period not to exceed Five (5) years." The recited reason was public safety, that "the absence of specific laws covering the taking of specimens encourages laxity in the use of firearms" among "an influx of scientific investigators as well as casual hunters, many armed with lethal weapons." The same clause names a threat "to the creatures themselves," so the protective reading is not an invention.
Ordinance 1984-2, effective April 2, 1984, reduced the offense to a gross misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in the county jail and a $1,000 fine, declared the animal an endangered species, and created a refuge described as covering a million acres. Whatcom County followed with Resolution 92-043 in June 1992, declaring the county a sasquatch protection and refuge area.
The ordinance is frequently offered as the reason no specimen exists. It cannot bear that. DEBUNKED It binds one county in one state, leaves untouched Oregon, California, Idaho, Montana, Texas, Florida, all of Canada and every other place the animal is reported, and its current penalty is a misdemeanor. It also has nothing to say about the mechanism behind most of the records cited above, which is a windshield.
What would actually close it
One specimen, and a taxonomic description built on it. Not a photograph, not a footprint cast, not a hair, not a sequence.
Luis Ruedas, Ryan Norris and Robert Timm, writing in the Journal of Mammalogy in 2025, set out what a description of a new mammal is now expected to contain: "a designation of a preserved physical holotype (Arts. 16.4.1, 61, 72.3, 73.1, and Recommendation 73A) and the name and location of the institution in which it is, or will be, deposited (Art. 16.4.2, Recommendation 16C)." Their reason came without decoration. "A name without a specimen linked to it cannot be rigorously tested, and as such does not constitute a hypothesis."
The field has already run that experiment twice, and both times produced the name without the specimen. Bernard Heuvelmans published a twenty-four-page description of the Minnesota Iceman in 1969, naming it Homo pongoides. No holotype was ever deposited in any collection, the object he described was never placed in scientific custody, and the name appears nowhere in GBIF's taxonomic backbone today. DEBUNKED Ketchum's Homo sapiens cognatus did make it into that backbone, in 2013, and has sat there ever since attached to no specimen and no observation.
That is the bar, and it is the same bar cleared by the okapi, the mountain gorilla, and the saola, which Vu Van Dung and colleagues described in Nature in June 1993 from physical material. Every subject faces the same requirement, because it is what lets someone who was not there check the claim.
John Napier, who spent a career on this and was not hostile to it, wrote that if a conclusion had to be reached on the hard evidence alone, science must declare "Bigfoot does not exist." He did not stop there, and honesty requires the rest of it: "I am convinced that Sasquatch exists, but whether it is all it is cracked up to be is another matter altogether. There must be something in north-west America that needs explaining, and that something leaves man-like footprints." Both halves are still where the matter sits. One specimen would settle it in an afternoon, and in more than a century none has arrived.
