The Evidence

The camera trap problem

Camera traps confirmed a lone Sierra wolverine, a resident Arizona jaguar, and a pigeon unrecorded since 1896. Twenty years of organized Bigfoot camera projects have returned bears.

Most of the Bigfoot file is old. The Patterson-Gimlin film is from 1967. The canonical track casts cluster between 1958 and the mid-1970s. The eyewitness canon was largely assembled before color television was standard. Automated cameras are the exception, which makes them the one line of evidence that behaves like an experiment rather than an archive. Commercial infrared-triggered cameras reached the market in the early 1990s DOCUMENTED, and the organized camera projects aimed at the animal date from 2006 onward.

What the box does

A trail camera is a weatherproof housing containing a motion sensor, usually a passive infrared sensor that triggers on a moving heat source, plus an illuminator that fires either as visible white light or as infrared.

"No-glow" units are described as illuminating at 940 nanometers, a wavelength chosen to light a night scene without being detected by humans or wildlife. The wildlife half of that claim does not survive testing CONTESTED. Paul Meek and colleagues measured 12 camera trap models in the laboratory and concluded, in their own words, "We present strong evidence that animals can hear the sound of, and see the infra-red illumination of camera traps." The device is quieter and dimmer than a person. It is not invisible, and the people who study these devices say so in print.

What the camera does have is indifference. It does not sleep, get bored, or fill in what it expected to see, and it is indiscriminate about what walks past. The same devices that document deer document things nobody was looking for.

How many cameras, honestly

The popular version of this argument opens with an enormous number of cameras in American forests. This entry uses no such number. The market-research figures in circulation for North American trail camera sales come from firms that do not publish their method and that sell the report containing it. I could not open one and check it, so none appears here, and readers should be suspicious of anyone who quotes one without a source.

Counted survey effort is better evidence anyway, because somebody counted it.

  • SNAPSHOT USA 2019, the first year of the coordinated national camera trap survey, sampled 1,509 camera trap sites from 110 camera trap arrays across all 50 states during a 14-week period, August 17 to November 24, 2019, producing 166,036 unique detections of 83 mammal species and 17 bird species.
  • SNAPSHOT USA 2019 through 2023 pooled contains 987,979 records of camera trap image sequence data and 9,694 records of camera trap deployment metadata, gathered in all 50 states and 12 ecoregions between August 1 and December 29 of each year DOCUMENTED.
  • SNAPSHOT USA 2024 alone contains 377,427 image sequence records from 3,127 camera deployments in 49 states.
  • Snapshot Wisconsin, run by the state Department of Natural Resources, is a statewide volunteer trail camera network monitoring wildlife year-round. Its public page carries no current totals for volunteers, cameras or images, so none are given here.

Two caveats belong here, and proponents are right to raise them.

Coverage is uneven. The SNAPSHOT USA 2021 paper reported that camera trap array density varied by an order of magnitude between ecoregions, from 0.22 to 5.9 arrays per 100,000 square kilometers DOCUMENTED. That is patchy by the survey's own account. Ecology published an erratum to that paper in May 2026 that I could not open, so its other figures are deliberately absent from the list above.

And private cameras are not randomly placed. They sit on game trails, logging roads, food plots and bait, in habitat selected for deer and elk. Nobody has sampled the continent's backcountry at random, and no honest version of this argument can pretend otherwise.

What the method does when a rare animal is actually there

Photographing common animals proves little. The useful test is what happens when the target is genuinely rare, wide-ranging, and famously hard to see.

The wolverine is the sharpest of these. In February 2008 one appeared on one of about 20 remote cameras that Katie Moriarty, then an Oregon State University graduate student studying American marten, had set at Sagehen Experimental Forest roughly eight miles north of Truckee. The Forest Service dated the photograph to February 28, 2008 and called it the first scientific confirmation of the animal in California since the 1920s. Tahoe Quarterly puts the last previous California record at 1922. DNA from collected fur indicated an animal likely from the Northern Rockies, the nearest genetic population being the Sawtooth Range of Idaho, about 600 miles away. His estimated home range was about 295 square miles. He was given the name Buddy. Over the next nine years he accumulated, in the magazine's phrase, "thousands of photos and videos," with a detection on a Sierra Pacific Industries camera as recently as March 17, 2017.

One animal, six hundred miles from home, in a state with no population to belong to. Twenty cameras set for something else found him in a season and then could not stop finding him.

The jaguar case has the same shape with better funding. A male jaguar was photographed in the Whetstone Mountains on November 19, 2011 by a cougar hunter, Donnie Fenn, and his daughter. Students at a Tucson middle school named him El Jefe in a contest run by the Center for Biological Diversity in November 2015. In between, cameras in the Santa Rita Mountains southeast of Tucson photographed him 118 times over 34 months, an average of once every 7.9 days, in every month from November 2012 through February 2015, as part of a three-year, $771,000 monitoring effort by University of Arizona and US Geological Survey researchers financed by the Department of Homeland Security DOCUMENTED. That record is the reason researchers could call him a resident rather than a visitor from Mexico. A camera in central Sonora photographed him again on November 27, 2021, although the identification was not announced until August 2022, because retrieving and processing the images and matching them against a database took that long DOCUMENTED.

The cougars show the method working and show its limits in the same breath. The US Fish and Wildlife Service delisting of the eastern cougar became final on January 22, 2018, declaring it extinct DOCUMENTED. The best-known eastern animal, killed by a car in Connecticut in 2011, was identified by DNA as a Black Hills cougar that had traveled at least 1,500 miles. That confirmation came from a carcass, not a camera. Reports that trail cameras photographed that particular animal along its route are widely repeated, and I could not verify them from any source I could open, so they are left out here.

Since then cameras have been the instrument documenting recolonization, and the agencies have been more careful than the headlines. Michigan biologists verified the Ontonagon County cubs in March 2025, then noted that they had not seen the kittens since the photographs and could not confirm the adult in the images was female, so the pictures alone do not establish breeding in the Upper Peninsula CONTESTED. The Minnesota DNR published the Voyageurs Wolf Project video of a female with three kittens near Orr and, on the same page, states that there is no evidence Minnesota has a self-sustaining breeding population, and that cougar occurrence in the state is still primarily transient animals, mostly males, out of the western Dakotas and Nebraska.

That is what a wildlife agency sounds like when a camera hands it something real and incomplete at once.

The cameras aimed at sasquatch

Organized camera effort aimed at the animal is real, and the most useful account of it comes from proponents themselves.

The North American Wood Ape Conservancy began Operation Forest Vigil in April 2006, deploying and maintaining camera traps for prolonged monitoring in remote parts of East Texas and the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma. The group's own FAQ describes "dozens of high-end wildlife camera traps in three locations designated as Areas X, Y, and Z," carried out from 2006 to 2011. Approximately 20 digital camera traps were deployed as of May 2007 and roughly 30 by December 2007. The stated long-term goal was 100 camera traps operational by 2012; the organization records plainly that the goal was not met and that roughly 40 were deployed over the project's life. The cameras photographed black bears, bobcats, coyotes, white-tailed deer and wild hogs. In the group's own words, "The project was concluded in early 2011 with no photo-captures of wood apes" DOCUMENTED.

The same organization published something rarer than a photograph. Daryl Colyer's account of camera trap damage reports that after a video system was destroyed and a companion camera identified a black bear as the culprit, "it quickly became apparent that every camera had been visited by bears," that "this pattern remained consistent in the following years," and that of the dozens of cameras used in the Ouachitas, "each attracted the deleterious attention of bears, forcing the purchase of protective boxes." The piece notes that petroleum-based plastics and rubber are thought to smell sweet to bears, and that a bear shoving a camera with its paw radically alters the lens position. Its conclusion, offered to its own community, is this: "Although such photos are sometimes interpreted as possibly indicative of wood ape behavior, black bears should be considered as the responsible species when the cameras are located within their range and habitat" DOCUMENTED. That is a proponent group telling other proponents that the default reading of an ambiguous camera image is a bear.

The Olympic Project has been in operation since February 2009, founded by Derek Randles, described in the Peninsula Daily News as a landscape contractor and licensed guide for Ridge Walkers Unlimited. The group works in the Sol Duc Valley on Washington's Olympic Peninsula, an area chosen partly because there had been three reported Bigfoot sightings there in a year ALLEGED. Randles described the group's aim as documentation: "We are sticklers for documentation. What we are trying to do is learn everything we can so when/if [scientifically-accepted] species verification happens, we have a large volume of study to hand over." A "comprehensive camera trap" effort on the western Olympics was stated as a goal in that 2014 article. The number of units, seasons and sites is not published anywhere I could reach, and olympicproject.com did not resolve on repeated attempts during research for this entry, so nothing further about that program is asserted here in either direction.

The single most famous camera trap claim came from Rick Jacobs, a hunter whose camera in the Allegheny National Forest, about 115 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, fired on September 16, 2007. Paul Majeta of the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization said of the resulting frames, "It appears to be a primate-like animal. In my opinion, it appears to be a juvenile Sasquatch" ALLEGED. Jerry Feaser of the Pennsylvania Game Commission answered, "There is no question it is a bear with a severe case of mange" DEBUNKED. A detail repeated in many later accounts, that the same sequence opened with photographs of bear cubs, does not appear in the contemporary reporting I could open, and it is left out until someone can point to a source for it.

The three counter-arguments

"Infrared flash and camera noise spook them." The premise is correct and has real support DOCUMENTED. Meek and colleagues (2014) measured the audio output of 12 camera trap models in an anechoic chamber at the National Acoustics Laboratory, measured ultrasonic output in 5 of them and infrared illumination output in 7, then compared the results against published perceptive hearing ranges for 21 mammal species and vision data for 3. Camera traps produce sound well inside the hearing range of most mammals and illumination many species can see. A pilot trial in the same work found that low batteries produced an ultrasonic output their detector registered while fully charged batteries produced none, which the authors offered as evidence that camera trap output varies with battery life. That is one pilot observation, not a measured curve, and it should be quoted as such.

The premise holds. The conclusion does not follow. Every animal in the table above can also hear and see camera traps and was photographed anyway, in some cases thousands of times. Detectability is not absence.

"The population is too small and too thinly spread." This is the most respectable objection and cannot be waved off. Cameras took years to find Arizona's jaguars because for most of that time there was no jaguar to find. But the objection carries a bill that is rarely paid. A population thin enough to explain twenty years of camera silence under this much passive surveillance is also thin enough to make the volume of sighting reports the same advocates cite hard to account for. Both cannot be maximized at once. The quantitative version of that tension, Floe Foxon's regression of sasquatch reports on black bear populations in the Journal of Zoology in 2024, is handled in full in The bear correlation, including the fact that the headline ratio changed by more than tenfold between preprint versions CONTESTED. No figure from it is repeated here.

"They have learned to avoid cameras." Here the claim outruns its evidence CONTESTED. Camera wariness is genuinely documented. Meek and colleagues (2016) evaluated four mammalian predators in road-based passive surveys and found that wild dogs, European red foxes, feral cats and spotted-tailed quolls all exhibited behaviors indicating they noticed camera traps, more often when approaching a device than when walking away from it. Some individuals of each species retreated and some moved toward the camera, with no consistent response within a species, and the authors warned that such responses may introduce unmeasured bias into abundance surveys. Documented wariness of that kind means altered approach and timing, not zero photographs, and it is measurable at all only because the cameras kept working.

The best available test on the closest living analogue points the other way. Kalan and colleagues (2019) treated camera traps as a natural novelty experiment on 43 groups of naive chimpanzees, bonobos and western gorillas across 14 African field sites. The apes noticed. Bonobo and gorilla groups showed a stronger looking response to the device than chimpanzees, bonobos were more likely to show alarm and other fearful behavior, and looking time was longer for young individuals, in smaller groups, and at sites where the apes were less familiar with researchers DOCUMENTED. Great apes with no prior exposure to the devices looked straight into them and were photographed doing it.

One point genuinely favors the proponents, and it should not be skipped. The overwhelming majority of private trail camera images are seen only by the owner, are never archived, and are deleted within a season. A genuine capture could exist and never reach anyone. That hole is real, though it narrows every year as cellular cameras push images directly to phones and cloud accounts.

The asymmetry

An animal that leaves no bones, no confirmed DNA and no specimen might be explained several ways. An animal that additionally never crosses an infrared beam is harder to explain. The same technology, in the same decades, on the same continent, found the only wolverine in California off a twenty-camera marten study, put a male jaguar in an Arizona mountain range 118 times and then picked him up again in Sonora a decade after his first photograph, verified cougar kittens in Michigan for the first time in over a century, and photographed a pigeon last collected in 1896.

Meanwhile the most disciplined proponent camera program on record ran roughly 40 traps for about five years in areas its own members considered active, and photographed bears, bobcats, coyotes, deer and hogs.

None of that proves absence, and this entry does not claim it does. It is the strongest available evidence of absence, and it is the only line in the file that gets stronger every year without anyone doing anything.
