The worldwide wildmen
Five wildman traditions from five regions. None has produced an animal, so they are ranked here by what biology would have to allow, with Sumatra's orang pendek first and Australia's yowie last.
Bigfoot is not a lone claim. Nearly every forested, mountainous, thinly surveyed region on earth keeps a hairy biped in its stories, and five of those traditions have attracted real money and credentialed scientists. None of the five has produced an animal, a body, or a sequence that resolved to an unknown primate. So they cannot be ranked by evidence for, because there is none. They can be ranked by what each one would require biology to permit, and on that measure the strongest case is the smallest and least publicized animal on the list, while the weakest belongs to a continent whose entire mammal fauna argues against it.
The yeti: the best-funded search, and what it kept finding
The Himalayan case has the most famous single image in the field. On the return leg of the 1951 British Mount Everest reconnaissance, the party crossed a new pass they named the Menlung La and discovered and named Menlungtse, then passed north of Gaurishankar on the way to Kathmandu. There they photographed animal tracks they could not identify and that their Sherpa companions said were yeti. DOCUMENTED Eric Shipton and Dr Michael Ward took the pictures, with an ice axe included for scale. Three frames exist: one of a line of tracks, and two of a single print with the ice axe and a boot laid beside it. The print shows two large toes and three smaller digits crowded together.
The photographs are real. What made the print is not settled, and the debate runs in both directions.
Michael Gill's 2017 Hillary biography records that Shipton and Bill Tilman kept up a "running Yeti joke" rivalry, and quotes Edmund Hillary in 1984 on the 1951 photograph: "Eric (Shipton) was a joker ... he's gone around it (the footprint) with his knuckles, shaped the toe, pressed in the middle. There's no animal that could walk with a foot like that. He made it up." ALLEGED That is one man's recollection, offered more than thirty years after the fact and seven years after Shipton's death, and Shipton never answered it. It is not a confession and it is not proof.
The competing explanation is mundane and specific. Daniel C. Taylor and Robert L. Fleming Jr. led a 1983 expedition into Nepal's Barun Valley, found yeti-like prints, and collected bear skulls that compared against reference material at the Smithsonian, the American Museum of Natural History and the British Museum resolved to one species, the Asiatic black bear. DOCUMENTED Three further years of work with John Craighead and Tirtha Shrestha produced the mechanism: young Asiatic black bears spend long periods in trees and train the inner claw outward into an opposable grip, and when a hind paw overprints a front paw, especially going uphill, the composite reads as an elongated bipedal track with a thumb. Taylor published the argument in Yeti: The Ecology of a Mystery (2017), including a previously unpublished Shipton photograph he located in the Royal Geographical Society archives that he says carries bear nail marks. CONTESTED
The Daily Mail put money behind the search in 1954. John Angelo Jackson led the mountaineering effort, making the first trek from Everest to Kanchenjunga, photographing yeti imagery at Tengboche gompa and tracking many footprints, most of them identifiable; the large unidentified ones were attributed to erosion and to wind widening the original print. On 19 March 1954 the paper reported that expedition teams had obtained hair specimens from what was said to be a yeti scalp at Pangboche monastery. Frederic Wood Jones, the anatomist and physical anthropologist, bleached them, cut them into sections, and compared microphotographs against known animals. He concluded the hairs had not come from a scalp at all, on the ground that no animal carries a hair ridge running from the base of the forehead across the pate to the nape, as the Pangboche relic does. DEBUNKED He could not name the source animal. He was satisfied it was not a bear and not an anthropoid ape, and said it came from "the shoulder of a coarse-haired hoofed animal." One caveat belongs on the record: the surviving account of Wood Jones's work runs through Ralph Izzard, the Daily Mail's own correspondent on the trip, who published it as The Abominable Snowman Adventure in 1955.
Pangboche also held a mummified hand, kept as a relic. Tom Slick's 1957 expedition brought back the first Western photographs of it. DOCUMENTED In 1959 the expedition member Peter Byrne reportedly removed pieces of it after the monks refused to allow it out for study, and claimed to have replaced the fragments with human bones and rewrapped the hand to disguise the swap. ALLEGED The actor James Stewart is alleged to have smuggled the bones out in his luggage. The primatologist William Charles Osman Hill examined the material, first called it hominid, then decided it was a closer match to a Neanderthal. That reading did not survive. On 27 December 2011, scientists in Edinburgh announced the finger was human, with Rob Ogden quoted: "We have got a very, very strong match to a number of existing reference sequences on human DNA databases ... Human was what we were expecting and human is what we got." DEBUNKED The hand itself was stolen from the monastery after a 1991 NBC broadcast and reportedly went into a private collection.
Then came the negative result that should have closed the file. The Himalayan Scientific and Mountaineering Expedition, better known as the Silver Hut, ran from September 1960 to June 1961. Edmund Hillary and Griffith Pugh initiated it with John Dienhart of World Book; Hillary costed it at $120,000 and the World Book board gave him $125,000 and, in his account, a practically free hand. Marlin Perkins, director of Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo, backed the yeti hunt and hoped to capture one. What the party actually came back with was a supposed yeti scalp, three Tibetan blue bear skins, a goat skin, a dried human hand, two red pandas and a fox. DOCUMENTED
They borrowed a scalp said to be about 200 years old from Khumjung monastery. Hillary and Desmond Doig took it to Chicago in December 1960, and Hillary and the village headman Khumjo Chumbi brought it to London, where a small sample was cut off for testing. Marca Burns compared skin and hair from the margin of the scalp against serow, Tibetan blue bear and Asian black bear and concluded that the sample "was probably made from the skin of an animal closely resembling the sampled specimen of Serow, but definitely not identical with it: possibly a local variety or race of the same species, or a different but closely related species" (Genus 18(1/4), 1962, 80 to 88). CONTESTED Note the whole sentence. Burns identified the object as manufactured from an animal skin, which disposes of it as a yeti scalp, and she explicitly declined to call it serow. Hillary's own verdict was flat: "The yeti is not a strange, superhuman creature as has been imagined. We have found rational explanations for most yeti phenomena," and another hunt would be "sheer waste of money." He asked Khumjung for a school in return for the loan, which is how the Himalayan Trust began.
Modern genetics has been through it twice. Sykes and colleagues solicited samples by press release in May 2012, received 57, recovered sequence from 30, and sequenced a mitochondrial 12S RNA fragment (Proceedings of the Royal Society B 281(1789), 2014). A Nepali yeti sample matched Capricornis sumatraensis, serow, again. Two Himalayan samples, one from Ladakh and one from Bhutan, matched Ursus maritimus, a Palaeolithic polar bear, and Sykes floated a possible unrecognized or hybrid bear. CONTESTED The paper itself hedged the match: "As the match is to a segment only 104 bp long, albeit in the very conserved 12S RNA gene, this result should be regarded as preliminary." Two published rebuttals followed within a year. Edwards and Barnett argued DNA degradation in brown bear material explained it (Proc. R. Soc. B 282(1800): 20141712, 2015). Gutiérrez and Pine concluded the fragment was "not sufficiently informative" for the claim and that the samples most likely came from brown bears (ZooKeys 487: 141 to 154, 2015). DEBUNKED Lan and colleagues, with Charlotte Lindqvist, then surveyed field and museum specimens including purported yeti material and assembled the first complete mitochondrial genomes for Himalayan brown bear and Himalayan black bear (Proc. R. Soc. B 284(1868): 20171804, 2017), reporting results "strongly supporting the biological basis of the yeti legend to be local, extant bears."
No ape is known from the central or high Himalaya. The nearest wild apes are the hoolock gibbons of eastern Bangladesh, northeast India, Myanmar and westernmost Yunnan, whose range reaches the eastern Himalayan foothills in Arunachal Pradesh and stops there. DOCUMENTED
The yeren of Shennongjia
China's version centers on the Shennongjia Forestry District in Hubei, though the earliest written reports come from Fang County, 90 km north, where a 1555 Ming-dynasty local gazetteer carried a story about yeren sheltering in mountain caves and preying on dogs and chickens. DOCUMENTED In 1974 Li Jian, a historian and vice secretary of the Shennongjia prefectural propaganda department, began recording local testimony, the oldest account dating to 1945. His work drew in Liu Minzhuang of East China Normal University and several scientists from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology in 1976. In 1977 Zhou Guoxing, with military personnel, zoologists, biologists and photographers, launched a yeren expedition in Shennongjia on behalf of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The China Wildman Research Society formed in 1981 with the help of the paleoanthropologist Jia Lanpo and offered ¥5,000 for a dead yeren and ¥10,000 for a live one, then about $1,750 and $3,500.
The frequently repeated figure of a 110-person expedition could not be verified for this entry, so it is left out.
The physical yield resolved to ordinary animals. Alleged bodies, hairs and footprints came from humans, Himalayan brown bears, Tibetan blue bears, Asian black bears, macaques, goral and serow. DEBUNKED Purported "monkey boy" skulls, offered as evidence of yeren and human hybrids, belonged to fully human children who had spinocerebellar ataxia, which is a grim illustration of how a wildman tradition consumes real people. DEBUNKED An earlier warning had already been ignored: in 1962 the paleoanthropologist Wu Rukang investigated reports from Xishuangbanna in Yunnan and dismissed them as a misidentified gibbon.
The almas, Porshnev, and Zana
The almas is reported across the Caucasus, the Tian Shan and Pamirs of Central Asia, and the Altai of western Mongolia. Nikolay Przhevalsky did not see one. In 1876 he published what was related to him under the name kung-guressu, "man-beast": "We were told that it had a flat face like that of a human being, and that it often walked on two legs, that its body was covered with a thick black fur, and its feet armed with enormous claws; that its strength was terrible, and that not only were hunters afraid of attacking it, but that the inhabitants removed their habitations from those parts of the country which it visited." ALLEGED Note the claws. Bears have claws. Apes and humans have nails.
In 1958 the Soviet historian Boris Porshnev took part in an expedition to look for the almas; it found nothing, and several participants preferred to document plants. In 1964, from the Soviet Academy of Sciences, he proposed that the almasti could be a relict population of Neanderthals surviving in Siberia. CONTESTED He put Zana at the center of that case in The Struggle for Troglodytes (1968) and, with Bernard Heuvelmans, in L'Homme de Néanderthal est toujours vivant (1974).
Zana was a real woman who lived in Abkhazia in the nineteenth century, had at least four children, died around the 1880s and was buried in the Genaba family cemetery. DOCUMENTED Almost everything else told about her is folklore collected long after her death: that she was captured wild in the forest, sold repeatedly, and ended up owned by the nobleman Edgi Genaba, who kept her in an enclosure for three years. ALLEGED Her neighbors took her for an abnauayu, the Abkhaz version of the wildman figure.
The excavation history is documented and strange. In 1962 the Moscow biologist Alexander Mashkovtsev and Porshnev went to Tkhina and collected local stories. Porshnev tried repeatedly to find Zana's grave and failed, so in 1971 he exhumed her son Khwit instead; that skull became Tkhina-71. In 1975 the Soviet Academy of Sciences' Institutes of Archaeology and Ethnology excavated the cemetery more thoroughly and found an anomalous burial: a skeleton laid on its side, partly crouched, without a coffin, with a mirror in the grave indicating a woman. That became Tkhina-75. DOCUMENTED The two skulls went to Moscow. The rest of the skeletal material went to the Museum of Natural History in Sukhumi and burned with it in 1992 during the war in Abkhazia. The anthropologists of the day thought Tkhina-75 was possibly of sub-Saharan African descent and set her aside as a candidate for Khwit's mother precisely because they did not believe Khwit had African ancestry.
Bryan Sykes later extracted mitochondrial DNA from Tkhina-71 and took saliva from six of Zana's living descendants, and reported in his 2016 trade book Bigfoot, Yeti, and the Last Neanderthal that Khwit's mother was of sub-Saharan African, specifically West African, descent. Rather than conclude she was an Afro-Abkhazian woman, he hypothesized descent from an African group that had reached the Caucasus more than 100,000 years earlier. That was criticized at the time and has since been disproved. DEBUNKED Some Russian and British newspapers went further and falsely reported that Sykes had claimed Zana might have been a yeti. DEBUNKED
Margaryan and colleagues, with M. Thomas P. Gilbert, sequenced the full genomes of Tkhina-71 and Tkhina-75 to an average depth of about 3x (Advanced Genetics 2(2): e10051, 2021). Identical mitochondrial DNA and a parent-offspring relationship established that the unknown woman was Zana. "Zana's immediate genetic ancestry can likely be traced to present-day East-African populations," with possible West African admixture; Khwit was of mixed African and Caucasian descent. She was a human being. The authors suggest she may have had congenital generalized hypertrichosis, and close by saying their findings "provide a clear example of how prejudices of the time led to notions of cryptic hominids that are still held and transmitted by some today."
The hair evidence went the same way. Sykes's eight Russian samples attributed to the almasty returned two brown bears, three horses, one cow, one American black bear and one raccoon. DEBUNKED The paper notes that the last two are native to North America and were submitted from Russia anyway, which says something about the chain of custody on all of this material.
The yowie, and a continent with no other primates
The usual presentation of this one flattens many peoples into a single legend, so start with what is actually documented, which is narrow. The Reverend William Ridley recorded "Yō-wī" among the Gamilaraay in Kámilarói and Other Australian Languages (1875, p. 138), glossing it as a spirit that roams the earth at night; the modern orthography is yawi. DOCUMENTED That is a spirit, not an animal, and it is one word from one language.
Beyond that, a long list circulates: Quinkin and joogabinna from parts of Queensland; Ghindaring, Jurrawarra, Myngawin, Puttikan, Doolaga, Gulaga and Thoolagal from parts of New South Wales; Noocoonah, Wawee, Pangkarlangu, Jimbra and Tjangara from elsewhere. These come from many different languages belonging to many different nations, and they were gathered into a single English-language list by outside collectors, chiefly Healy and Cropper's 2006 survey. The grouping is the collectors' work. It is not a claim any of those nations has made, these beings are not established to be the same being, and this entry does not speak for anyone. CONTESTED
The colonial record is separate and traceable. The Australian Town and Country Journal of 18 November 1876 relayed, at second hand, reports attributed to Aboriginal people of "some unearthly animal or inhuman creature ... namely the Yahoo-Devil Devil, or hairy man of the wood." In the same paper on 9 December 1882, the amateur naturalist Henry James McCooey published "The Naturalist: Australian Apes," claiming he had seen an "indigenous ape" on the New South Wales south coast between Batemans Bay and Ulladulla: tailless, covered in long black hair, reddish fur at the throat and chest, small restless eyes behind matted hair, and nearly five feet tall standing upright. He said he threw a stone at it. ALLEGED He then offered to catch one for the Australian Museum for £40.
Note the size. McCooey's animal was under five feet. Modern yowie reports run 2.1 to 3.6 m. Those are not descriptions of the same thing, which is close to the argument the historian Graham Joyner made in The Hairy Man of South Eastern Australia (1977) and again in Monster, Myth or Lost Marsupial? (2009): that the modern yowie was barely known before the mid-1970s and grew out of a conflation with the older nineteenth-century "yahoo" reports. CONTESTED Alleged tracks are inconsistent in both shape and toe count. Rex Gilroy, a self-described cryptozoologist who died in April 2023, claimed to have collected more than 3,000 reports. ALLEGED
The decisive problem is none of that. Australia's only native placental mammals are bats and murid rodents, and the rodents arrived 5 to 10 million years ago. DOCUMENTED Monotremes have been present since the Early Cretaceous, and marsupials and placentals both appear in the Eocene record, but only the marsupials survived. No primate of any kind, living or fossil, is known from Australia except humans. Homo erectus crossed the Lombok gap and reached Flores but never made it across; Homo sapiens colonized Australia around 65,000 to 50,000 years ago. A yowie therefore requires either a separate, undetected primate colonization of an isolated continent or a marsupial that convergently evolved into a bipedal ape. Neither has fossil support.
The orang pendek, and why it ranks first
Sumatra's orang pendek is usually described as a ground-dwelling, bipedal, short-furred ape standing 80 to 150 cm. That size range is quoted everywhere; its documentary trail is thin, running back through a 1924 newspaper item. Reports cluster in Kerinci Regency and inside Kerinci Seblat National Park, 13,791 km² across West Sumatra, Jambi, Bengkulu and South Sumatra, in the Bukit Barisan range, with Mount Kerinci at 3,805 m. DOCUMENTED
The Indigenous material here is routinely misused. The Suku Anak Dalam, also called Orang Rimba, are nomadic peoples of the lowland forests of Jambi and South Sumatra, not of Kerinci Seblat. In the Bukit Duabelas region they speak of a Hantu Pendek, which translates as "short ghost" and which they understand as a supernatural entity or demon rather than an animal. In their accounts it travels in groups of five or six, lives on wild yams, hunts animals with small axes, and ambushes lone hunters. Along the Makekal River people tell of ancestors who outwitted these cunning but dim-witted beings, a story told to boast of their own reason. DOCUMENTED Cryptozoological write-ups keep the group size and the yams and drop the axes, the demon and the joke, which turns somebody's cosmology into a wildlife report it was never meant to be.
The most-quoted colonial account is van Heerwarden's, described from an encounter while he was surveying land in 1923. It is worth reading past the usual excerpt. He wrote that the creature's dark head hair "fell to just below the shoulder-blades or even almost to the waist"; that "had it been standing, its arms would have reached to a little above its knees"; that its legs "seemed to me rather short"; and, closing, that "there was nothing repulsive or ugly about its face, nor was it at all apelike." ALLEGED Arms reaching above the knee are human proportions, not ape proportions, and the witness himself said the face was not apelike. The account is regularly cited as evidence for an ape while saying close to the opposite.
Debbie Martyr has worked on tiger conservation in Kerinci Seblat, which is documented in the conservation literature on the park. She is widely reported in secondary sources to have seen orang pendek during long-term fieldwork there. No primary published account of those sightings could be located for this entry, so nothing about them is asserted here. ALLEGED
What still makes this the strongest of the five is that it asks for the least. The reported size is the size of a real animal. The habitat is genuine ape habitat, in a country that holds orangutans, siamangs and gibbons. And Sumatra did recently gain a great ape on paper: the Tapanuli orangutan was described as a species in 2017 (Nater et al., Current Biology 27(22): 3487 to 3498), with fewer than 800 individuals in about 1,000 km². DOCUMENTED
That precedent is weaker than it is usually made to sound. The Batang Toru population was reported in 1939 and rediscovered by expedition in 1997, so it was not hiding. What 2017 established was that a known population is a distinct species, a taxonomic result rather than the discovery of an unknown animal. Tapanuli orangutans are also thought to be exclusively arboreal, never observed on the ground across more than 3,000 hours of watching, which makes them a poor model for a ground-dwelling biped.
The physical evidence has not delivered either. The single Sumatran sample attributed to orang pendek in the Sykes survey matched Tapirus indicus, the Malayan tapir, which lives in the same park. DEBUNKED And a mundane candidate is sitting right there: the sun bear occurs in Sumatra, runs 100 to 140 cm in head and body length at 25 to 65 kg with a shoulder height near 70 cm, stands on its hind feet to look around and to threaten, and has hairless soles that leave a strikingly foot-like print. DOCUMENTED
Ranking
None of these five has produced an animal. The order below reflects how much biology each one asks you to grant, not how much evidence stands behind it.

Orang pendek comes first because it asks for something biology already allows, in a place where large primates live. The yowie comes last because it asks for a primate on a continent whose entire mammal fauna says no. In between sit three traditions whose physical evidence has been tested repeatedly and has come back, every time, as an animal already known to science.
